A group of 17 upcoming goalkeepers (15 boys and two girls) from the Mario Muscat Goalkeeper School have just returned from a one-week training camp at the Scuola Numero 1 in Italy.

For the sixth consecutive year, aspiring Maltese goalkeepers had the opportunity to practise in one of the best ’keepers centres in Italy, thanks to the twinning agreement between the two schools.

Training sessions, held twice daily, focused mainly on the physical and technical aspects of goalkeeping.

The contingent, led by Mario Muscat, Simon Grech and Christopher Sant, also had the opportunity to visit Coverciano, the technical centre of the Italian football federation (FIGC) and base of the Italian national team.

As Scuola Numero 1 and Mario Muscat Goalkeeper School will be celebrating their 20th and 10th anniversaries respectively next year, there is a good possibility that the 2013 camp will be staged in Coverciano.

Based in the Tuscan town of Chianciano, Scuola Numero 1 is run by the experienced Giuseppe De Fidio who has been working in this field for the last 19 years.

Some renonwed keepers, such as Storari, Anania, Perin, Bindi and Frattali, trained at the Scuola Numero 1 in their youth.
