Two letters appeared in The Times (July 10 and 16) regarding danger and health risks to swimmers created by dozens of yacht owners and other power boats who anchor their craft in our quaint Balluta Bay over the weekend and to which I fully concur. Has Balluta Bay become a new yacht marina?

A few of these boat owners do not come to relax, enjoy the beautiful surroundings or bathe in the clean sea but put their music on full volume, much to the disgust of swimmers and people walking along the promenade. Last Sunday, at about noon, two of the boat owners had the cheek to let their sons, both in their mid-teens, cruise around the bay in two outboard-engined dinghies, putting at risk the many swimmers in the area. Is it bathers who are to watch out for boats, rather than vice-versa?

As we are in the height of the summer season, I request that Transport Malta, in conjunction with the St Julians local council, tackles this matter urgently. The authorities must ensure that boats are berthed in an orderly way and a good distance from shore. They must also ensure that all the vessels moored in this zone have their registration markings visible at all times and conform to the sea craft regulations, for the benefit of one and all.

Let us keep our beautiful Balluta Bay waters, safe and pollution-free.
