One of four men charged with conspiracy to import 30 kilograms of cannabis that later turned out to be soap claimed yesterday his human rights were breached when he was not granted access to a lawyer during investigations.

Marvin Debono, 27, also argued that the wide discretionary powers given to the Attorney General when deciding whether a case was decided by a magistrate or a judge, where punishment was substantially different, also breached his rights.

Mr Debono was arrested after the police raided a yacht, the Jolly Roger, in December 2008 after receiving information about a “drugs” delivery.

However, the 30 kilos of cannabis the suspects had allegedly conspired to import turned out to be soap.

Mr Debono’s application claiming human rights breach was signed by lawyers Franco Debono, Arthur Azzopardi and Marion Camilleri.
