What on Earth is Xtruppaw, you’re probably asking yourself, unless you’re already familiar with this notorious band of renegade musicians? The word itself is to be found in no dictionary (unless they decide to publish their very own, that is) but it is very much present in the local underground music scene, where it has been doing the rounds for quite some time.
For the uninitiated, Xtruppaw is a local band whose repertoire features some of the most humorous songs, exclusively written and sung in Maltese, the larger part of which highlight aspects of the Maltese way of life, on top of which the band adds its own light-hearted touch of fun and more than a touch of creative imagination.
Following an extended sabbatical interrupted only by a handful of live appearances, the band is finally back with a new album to follow up the notorious (and rather brilliant) Is-CD tal-iXtruppaw debut they released in 2006. For those who were present and remember the merry mayhem that accompanied that album’s launch, there should be no doubt that the upcoming launch concert for the new album is an event not to be missed.
Wedding theatrics to catchy songs, while lyrically exposing all those social oddities everyone usually takes for granted, Xtruppaw’s formula has proved to be a winner; one their audience simply loves and has been thirsty for these past few years.
The band taken a back seat from the limelight and toiled away in the studio, brewing up some mighty new tunes to unleash upon us in the form of a brand new album called Xtruppositorju, packaged, as the band describes it, “in a delightful cover that hints at an unexpected journey of self-discovery”.
The new album, featuring 13 original songs and a very special surprise, will be officially launched at a special gig that will be held at the Corradino Old Military Prison on July 6. Expect the usual flurry of onstage antics, an eclectic mix of musical styles, outrageous anecdotes and more instruments than Xtruppaw have ever brought onstage before.
