Xewkija Tigers and Nadur Youngsters recovered from defeats in their opening league outings to secure their first points following victories over SK Victoria Wanderers and Victoria Hotspurs respectively.

In another match, Xagħra United and Kerċem Ajax shared the spoils to remain joint top in the standings.

Xewkija had a difficult start against the Wanderers, conceding two early goals. David Udo Monday opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Kenneth Mercieca doubled the Wanderers’ lead before the half-hour mark.

The Tigers pulled one back on 33 minutes through Paul Rapa but Victoria fluffed some good chances to restore their two-goal lead and were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

A Christian Bugeja goal put the teams level (2-2) on 69 minutes and, after the faltering Wanderers were reduced to 10 men when Sam Frank Bajada was sent off for a double booking, Xewkija turned the result in their favour late on with a Dene Shields goal from an Elton Vella centre.

Nadur’s 3-1 win over the Hotspurs was fully deserved.

They dictated matters for long stretches with newcomer Kalin Ganchev showing some neat touches while the Hotspurs had Saturday Nanpere and Joseph Refalo making their first showing for the team.

Victoria’s Noel Borg cancelled out Charles Hili’s opener for Nadur but the latter regained the lead on 36 minutes thanks to a fine strike by Joseph Portelli.

The Youngsters remained the better side and practically made sure of the points with Alex Simoncic’s 62nd-minute goal from a free-kick.

The match between Xagħra and Kerċem, the only two teams who gained victories on the first day of the championship, ended in a goalless stalemate.

Xagħra went close early on with efforts from Joseph Vella and Chris Camilleri.

However, as the match progressed, Kerċem came more into the picture and also created some scoring opportunities of their own, mainly through Stoyko Sakaliev and Sabri Rais.

Sakaliev had a header which ended inches wide while Xagħra could have scored a last-gasp goal but Kerċem keeper Courtney Mercieca denied Camilleri with a timely save.

Division Two

Żebbuġ Rovers and Munxar Falcons returned to winning ways after a stuttering start to the new season.

The Rovers beat Qala Saints 2-1 after the latter had taken the lead through Mario Mifsud just before half-time.

Żebbuġ evened the score with a penalty by Joe Hili and struck the winner through Sylvan Galea 20 minutes from time.

Munxar beat Għarb Rangers by the odd goal in three.

The Falcons took the lead through Michael Pace (12) but Għarb equalised through Christian Attard a minute from the break.

Munxar scored the goal that mattered from a penalty, converted by Mario Azzopardi, 13 minutes from time.

Għarb finished the match with a man less after Orlando Atzori was sent off 11 minutes from time.
