A British daredevil has filmed himself climbing to the top of the Eiffel Tower without the use of safety ropes.

Haggis tweak to break into US

Haggis-makers could “tweak” the recipe for the famous Scottish delicacy in a bid to get round a ban on selling it in America, Scotland’s Rural Affairs Secretary has suggested.

Richard Lochhead is in the US and Canada this week to promote Scottish food and drink. As part of his visit he will raise the issue of America’s import ban on haggis, which has been in place since 1971.

Mr Lochhead, who will be accompanied by James Macsween, director of haggis-maker Macsween of Edinburgh, for part of the trip, said if the product could be sold in the US it could help boost Scotland’s economy.

Man to take lead in Hello Dolly

A production of Hello Dolly is breaking ground with a man taking on the lead role made famous by Carol Channing and Barbra Streisand.

Lee Roy Reams, who starred opposite Channing twice in the Tony award-winning show, is stepping into the part at the Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, Florida. The theatre had to get special permission from composer Jerry Herman.

The musical tells the story of a matchmaker who sweeps into the lives of a store owner and his staff, as well as two ladies in a millinery. It will be the first production in the US where the role of Dolly Levi has been played by a man.

Dozens of employees and fair visitors burst into applause as GusGus was placed back in the pen where he was last seen. Several people huddled to watch the pair reunite below a Welcome Home GusGus! banner and Welcome Home balloons.

Fair livestock director Karen Searle said a man walking his dog by a canal in Phoenix found GusGus and took him to a pet store, where a worker told the State Fair. GusGus was hungry and tired but not injured. Ms Searle thinks someone dumped him near the canal.

Poe toaster chosen

The next Poe Toaster in charge of performing a tribute at Edgar Allan Poe’s gravesite has been selected. The Maryland Historical Society, Poe Baltimore and Westminster Burying Grounds decided to hold a contest to select a new Poe Toaster, accepting proposals for how each candidate would pay tribute to Mr Poe.

The new Poe Toaster, whose identity is a secret, will perform a tribute at Mr Poe’s gravesite during the writer’s birthday in January. The tradition started after a visitor left three roses and a bottle of cognac at his grave on the night of his birthday – every year from the 1930s until 2009.
