Nature lovers are being asked to monitor the UK’s dragonflies and damselflies with the help of a new app.

The mobile phone app, iRecord Dragonflies, is being launched to help people identify and record sightings of the insects as part of efforts to study and conserve them.

Dragonflies and damselflies play an important role as predators of insects such as mosquitos, and are good indicators of the health of rivers, lakes and wetlands.

Dog wee threat to UK post box

The Royal Mail is threatening to close a post box for “health and safety” reasons – as dogs keep urinating on it.

A large sign has been fixed to the red postbox outside the Co-Op store in Queen Square, Penzance, Cornwall, stating that dogs repeatedly weeing on it poses a “significant health and safety risk”.

If dogs persist to cock their legs on the post box, then the Royal Mail will have “no choice” but to close the box permanently to “preserve the health and safety of our staff”, the sign advises.

Borrowed tie for Labour leader

Jeremy Corbyn has admitted borrowing a tie for his big conference speech after his team said it should be a different shade of red.

The Labour leader revealed the late wardrobe change on Sky News while promoting his leader’s address to a conference in Brighton.

Mr Corbyn has faced some criticism for the way he dresses as he appears often without a tie and was photographed behind the scenes of the conference wearing socks and sandals.

Monkey business by escaped pet

A monkey that escaped its owner’s home in an Orlando suburb chewed on its neighbours’ post, pulled moulding off a police car and rocked back and forth on a street sign.

Zeek was eventually caught when his owner returned home a short time later. Sanford police officers responded to the neighbourhood after a call to report that a monkey was eating post out of a post box.

Zeek jumped on the officers’ squad car and pulled some trim off the roof. The monkey also drank from a water bottle the officers offered as a distraction. Sanford police officers took video of Zeek and posted it on the agency’s Facebook page. “Zeek had a little fun with our patrol car,” the officers posted in one video.

Sammy Davis Jr honoured

Officials have renamed a street near the Las Vegas Strip in tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.

Naturally, a dedication ceremony was held at the three-way intersection where Sammy Davis Jr Drive, Frank Sinatra Drive and Dean Martin Drive meet. Davis family members including his son, Manny Davis, joined Clark County commission members and local entertainers for the event on what used to be called Industrial Road, just west of the Strip.

County spokesman Erik Pappa says Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani called it fitting to honour the trio of Rat Pack members who helped put Las Vegas on the map in the 1960s.

Tomb tragedy in China’s Henan

Chinese authorities say three men died when they suffocated while trying to rob an ancient tomb in the central province of Henan, known for its many relic-laden graves.

Yiyang county police said that five villagers had entered a chamber of the tomb near their village of Chengjiao when three of them fainted from a lack of air. They say the other two men called for help, but attempts to rescue the three failed.

Police say one more man fainted during the rescue but was resuscitated, while the fifth tomb raider fled. Both men were detained. They did not say what caused the lack of air in the tomb. Known as a cradle of Chinese civilisation, Henan is famous for the relics buried under its villages.
