Jeremy Corbyn may not be the bookies’ favourite to succeed Ed Miliband as leader of the Labour party but he has already made British political history – by virtue of his beard.

Mr Corbyn is the first person with a beard to ever stand in a contest for the Labour leadership. Were he to win, he would be only the second bearded person to lead his party. The first was Keir Hardie, who led Labour from 1906-08 but who was not elected to the post.

There have been other Labour leaders with facial hair but none has boasted a full beard of the kind worn by Mr Corbyn and Mr Hardie.

VE Day women traced on Twitter

Two young women famously photographed celebrating VE Day with two sailors in a fountain in Trafalgar Square have been traced thanks to an appeal on social media.

The Imperial War Museums (IWM) wanted to find out more about the women in the picture taken during the Victory in Europe celebrations on May 8, 1945, which has been used across the world to highlight the end of the Second World War in Europe, as their information about the photograph was sparse.

Just 24 hours after putting out an appeal on Twitter, IWM was contacted by a relative who identified them as Joyce Digney and Cynthia Covello, life-long friends after they met in the Women’s Land Army in the summer of 1944, when Cynthia was 20 and Joyce was 18.

Summer gathering at Stonehenge

Pagans and hippies were among thousands of people who descended on Stonehenge to mark this year’s summer solstice.

Police said around 23,000 attended the neolithic site in Wiltshire to witness the sun rising on the longest day of the year.

The figure was down on the estimated 36,000 who attended last year and the 30,000 expected, but they were able to get a glimpse of the sun after it came over the horizon at 4.52am, despite cloud in the area.

Man admits getting cash from kids

A 70-year-old north-east Ohio man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of receiving stolen property for allegedly accepting cash from a 13-year-old boy accused of stealing 25,000 dollars (£15,750) from his grandfather.

The charge accuses the man of accepting less than 7,500 dollars (£4,700). He pleaded not guilty to the charges in Medina.

Prosecutors say the man and his wife received the cash from their 14-year-old grandson, who accepted it from the 13-year-old. The man’s wife and a 31-year-old woman also have been charged with receiving stolen property and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Some money was recovered. The two teen boys are also facing juvenile charges.

Man steals 12 cabs in nine days

Police are seeking the suspect who has stolen a dozen cabs in nine days in Philadelphia.

Some of the cabs have been used in crimes.

The thefts have occurred in the west and south-west section of the city and most belong to 215 Get A Cab. Five cabs have been recovered, but police are worried the other cabs could be used to commit crimes.

Worker finds 400 live grenades

An Austrian construction worker knew he had struck metal with the shovel of his excavator. But it took police to determine what he had unearthed – nearly 400 live Second World War grenades.

The discovery in the Tyrolean city of Innsbruck led to the evacuation of apartments closest to the find, while experts defused some of the ordnance and blew up the rest. No-one was injured.

Police believe the grenades were part of an underground ammunition depot.
