Lego is to immortalise Doctor Who with a set of toys due to materialise on shelves by the end of the year.

The Lego Group confirmed that the time lord will appear in plastic brick form after the concept suggested by Doctor Who fan Andrew Clark received the 10,000 votes it needed to be considered for production on the Lego Ideas website.

The BBC launched Doctor Who in 1963 and it is the world’s longest running sci-fi drama.

Eiffel Tower the favourite for selfies

Big Ben and London Bridge are two of the most popular spots in the world to take a selfie, according to new statistics.

Tourist attraction site AttractionTix analysed social media to find mentions of travel hotspots alongside the world “selfie”, and have compiled a list of the most popular places to pose for a self-taken self portrait.

Skier sparks avalanche in the Alps

A skiing and snowboarding event in the Austrian Alps has been cancelled after a competitor set off an avalanche – from which he escaped with bruised ribs and legs.

Organisers said French free skier Julien Lopez set off the 4,000-square-metre snow slab on the 2,800-metre Quellspitze as he hiked back up the hill to collect a ski he lost during a crash.

The 33-year-old, who is the 2009 world free ski champion, was carrying an airbag system which prevented him from getting buried under the snow, and he skied down to the finish area after being helped by a rescue crew.

Monopoly games have real money

The French version of Monopoly is celebrating its 80th year by slipping cash into 80 boxes of the game.

One box will have the full complement of real cash – €20,580 – as well as the Monopoly money needed to actually play the game, one of the most popular in France.

Another 79 boxes will have smaller amounts, according to the game’s manufacturer, Hasbro.

The Paris version lets players buy the Champs Elysees, four railway stations and other famous avenues of the French capital.

Newborn ‘painted’ puppies a delight

Three litters of endangered African painted dog puppies normally found in southern Africa have made their public debut at a British animal reserve.

Keepers said the birth of the puppies, a mix of males and females, will help ensure the species survives for future generations.

Their arrival takes the number of African painted dogs at Port Lympne Reserve near Ashford, Kent, to 43, split between five packs.

Port Lympne’s animal director Adrian Harland said: “We’re delighted with the litters. All the pups are really strong and healthy.”

Coughing up for pizza 13 years late

A customer who used a bounced cheque to pay for pizza has admitted the crime and coughed up the cash – 13 years after tucking into the takeaway.

Reddit user “Morgan_Freemun” shared a touching letter he received from the anonymous fast-food lover that was accompanied with a money order for $54.39 (€47.55).

The shame-faced customer not only owned up to their 2002 indiscretion, they covered the original $20 bill and added interest at a rate of eight per cent over 13 years.

The guilt-ridden customer, who admitted to being “incredibly ashamed and embarrassed”, wrote: “I was going through a tough time financially and was at the end of my rope.”
