A supercharged milk float has picked up a new world record after reaching a speed of 84mph on a racing circuit.

The specially adapted vehicle, sponsored by Weetabix On The Go Breakfast Drinks, beat the existing top speed for a milk float of 77mph on the tarmac at Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire.

Complete with bull-bars, and boasting a V8 engine, the float was crafted from a traditional 4mph electric float.

Luxury lunch for the homeless

A group of New York's homeless could have been forgiven for thinking they were dreaming when they were treated to a slap-up meal at a posh restaurant – and then handed $300 each.

Chinese tycoon Chen Guangbiao, 46, bought 200 residents of a Manhattan homeless shelter lunch at the Boathouse restaurant in Central Park, which included sesame-crusted tuna followed by steak, all served to them by white-gloved waiting staff.

The multi-millionaire recycling magnate said he wanted to disprove the cliche of rich Chinese businessmen who spend their money only on luxuries for themselves, and finished lunch by handing each attendee three $100 bills.

Diploma fail for US university

A university in the US is getting national attention for a mistake that its own students would be criticised for.

Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communication in Illinois recently gave 30 diplomas to graduates in which the word “integrated’ was spelled without the “n”.

The diploma should have been tagged with a “Medill F” – a stamp earned by students who commit factual or spelling errors – but students greeted the error with humour, and the university promised to provide amended diplomas.

Travellers’ unsporting behaviour

Trespassing travellers stopped a UK school’s sports day going ahead after pitching up on its playing fields.

The group parked up to 25 vehicles and caravans on the council-owned Bee Lane sports field in Wolverhampton on Tuesday, only hours after being moved on from another site in the city.

City councillor Ian Angus said the travellers' actions had forced the cancellation of nearby Elston Hall Primary School's sports day.

He said the council had now served a legal notice on the group, forcing them to vacate the field, located partly in his Bushbury North ward, or be moved off by police.
