‘Memorial’ bid for roadkill chickens’

A US animal rights advocate wants to place a roadside memorial in Georgia to remember chickens killed in a highway crash.

A member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has filed an application for the memorial with the Georgia Department of Transportation. If approved, a memorial would be placed at the Hall County site where a truck hauling live chickens overturned last month.

Sarah Segal of Atlanta writes in her application that she wants to place a 10ft tombstone memorial for one month on the right of way of US 129 to mark the deaths of the chickens. The driver of the chicken truck and the other vehicle involved were not seriously injured.

Actor hires coach to lose his US lilt

British actor Gary Oldman has lived in the US so long he had to hire a voice coach to relearn his English accent.

The star (pictured) said he has acquired an American twang which is barely perceptible as a result of spending so much time there with his family. He told the Graham Norton Show he needed the extra help from the dialect tutor to brush up for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which won him an Oscar nomination.

Oldman, 55, said: “I have lived in America for so long that occasionally weird sounds that I don’t notice slip in.”
