Fifteen human skulls have been found in a wooden box on a street in Prague, and another was found in a rubbish bin.

Police found the skulls near a waste container after they were alerted by a telephone caller. A spokeswoman said each skull was numbered, and another skull, also bearing a number, was found in a bin the day before by a homeless person.

Police say it is not clear whether the two cases are connected, and have asked experts to help in their investigation. (PA)

Tailbacks as Lamborghini catches fire

British rush-hour commuters yesterday faced lengthy tailbacks after a luxury sports car caught fire near a motorway intersection.

Photographs posted on Twitter by the Central Motorway Police Group showed fire crews beside the burnt-out wreckage of the Lamborghini Murcielago on the M6 near Coleshill, Warwickshire.

The northbound carriageway of the M6 was closed as emergency crews dealt with the incident, which caused long delays on both the M6 and M42.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze. (PA)

Second Virgin Galactic test flight

Virgin Galactic says it has successfully conducted a second rocket-powered, supersonic test flight of the passenger spaceship it is developing.

The craft dubbed SpaceShipTwo reached 69,000ft over California’s Mojave Desert after it was dropped from a carrier aircraft and its rocket was ignited for a 20-second burn.

Two pilots and a flight test engineer were aboard as the craft reached a maximum speed of Mach 1.43.

Its altitude and speed exceed-ed marks set during the first rocket-powered flight last April.

Virgin Galactic plans to take paying passengers on suborbital flights that briefly enter space.

The commercial spaceline is owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi’s Aabar Investments PJS. (PA)

Thieves steal prosthetic eye

British police are hunting thieves who stole a pensioner’s prosthetic eye during a burglary.

The 79-year-old victim has had the eye since he was six and describes it as a “part of his body”.

Avon and Somerset Police said the man lost his eye after an accident and detectives urged the thieves to return it as it is of no use to them.

The thieves broke into the house that the pensioner shares with his wife in Downend, South Gloucestershire while the couple slept.

They found the car keys and used them to steal the couple’s red Seat Leon. They also took a disabled parking badge, cash, two mobile phones, a flat screen television, figurines and a plain gold ring. (PA)

Major overhaul for famous music venue

British music venue the Hammersmith Apollo yesterday unveiled a major overhaul to restore its art deco glory.

Owners of the venue, where David Bowie famously killed off his alter ego Ziggy Stardust and BBC stand-up comedy show Live At the Apollo is filmed, have given it a £5 million (€5.9 million) revamp.

The building, which first opened as the Gaumont Palace Cinema in 1932, is also being renamed as the Eventim Apollo.

The refit has seen fixtures and fittings, including ornate plasterwork, restored to their original design, and further work over the next few months will involve reupholstering more seats.

In the coming weeks the venue will host performances by Billy Joel, Paul Weller, Jimmy Carr, Pixies and Russell Brand. (AP)
