Two tiger cubs born to a first-time mother appear to be thriving, according to keepers at a wildlife park in Britain.

The Amur tigers’ arrival just over a week ago was hailed as a significant birth for Highland Wildlife Park in Cairngorms National Park, boosting the survival chances of the endangered species.

Only around 450 Amur tigers are thought to remain in the wild and the population is under threat from habitat loss and poaching.

The rare cubs were born on May 28.

Their sex will not be known until they are two to three months old so they have not been named yet. (AP)

Morgue fridge on eBay

New York’s Office of General Services has turned to eBay in an attempt to sell off a huge, steel morgue refrigerator at a Manhattan psychiatric hospital.

Bidders have been vying for the four-drawer unit for the past week, but that price does not include delivery.

Buyers have to be willing to remove the fridge themselves from the Manhattan Psychiatric Centre.

Office of General Services spokeswoman Heather Groll said the agency does get unusual surplus items to sell from time to time, including barbers’ chairs from prisons and police cars, but she did not recall a previous sale of a morgue cooler. The auction ends today. (PA)

Gays’ protester is rebuffed

First lady Michelle Obama threatened to leave a night-time fundraising event unless a protester stopped interrupting her speech.

Mrs Obama was speaking at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Washington. According to a pool report of the event, an audience member started shouting in support of an executive order on gay rights halfway through her remarks.

Mrs Obama eventually moved toward the protester and said the person could either “listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving”.

The crowd started shouting for Ms Obama to stay and the protester was escorted out of the event. (PA)
