The UK Independence Party (UKIP) is not worthy of the description “fruitcakes and loonies”, the leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party’s eastern region has said.

In a letter to The Independent, Lord Toby Jug said the use of the term “loonies” had become “cavalier” and it was his party who sought “the Holy Grail of Loonyism”.

He wrote: “As the official party of protest, we Official Monster Raving Loonies strongly object to use of the terms ‘fruit cakes and loonies’ when describing UKIP. We who seek the Holy Grail of Loonyism strongly object to the cavalier use of these terms.”

Cast on ‘mad night out’

Simon Pegg has revealed that his Star Trek co-stars went on a mission to party while shooting the latest movie together.

New recruit Benedict Cumberbatch joined Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, director J.J. Abrams and other stars of Star Trek Into Darkness at the premiere in London's Leicester Square tonight.

Fans went crazy for the Sherlock star, who plays villain John Harrison in the new sequel, giving him the loudest screams as he arrived on the white carpet, and the rest of the cast hailed his acting as out of this world.

Pegg revealed that the cast enjoyed a wild night out during filming.

Small world

Scientists have taken the idea of a film short down to new levels. Molecular levels.

IBM has made the tiniest stop-motion movie ever – a one-minute video of individual carbon monoxide molecules repeatedly rearranged to show a boy dancing, throwing a ball and bouncing on a trampoline.

Each frame measures 45 by 25 nanometres – there are 25 million nanometers in an inch – but hugely magnified.

WI pirate boob

A former hostage has spoken of the moment he walked into a Women's Institute meeting to give a talk on international piracy and found the group dressed as pirates.

Colin Darch said he was amused that members of Parkham WI in North Devon had donned fancy dress for the occasion.

Mr Darch, a retired sailor from North Devon, has written a book about his experience of being kidnapped by pirates in 2008.

The 75-year-old said his hosts had been “embarrassed” by the mix-up and described the event as something like The Pirates of Penzance.
