It is better known for being aligned with the rising and setting of the sun but Stonehenge has been transformed into something a lot more fiery.

As the sun set on Tuesday, the World Heritage site was illuminated with fire sculptures and candle-lit paths to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Fire Garden, which runs for three consecutive nights, was created by French arts group Compagnie Carabosse as part of the London 2012 Festival. Organised by the Salisbury International Arts Festival, the Wiltshire-based attraction has been transformed into a “glowing fairytale environment” with “mysterious fiery engines”, flaming fire pots and “cascades of candles”.

The event will run until this night.

‘Wife chained for decade’

A US man tortured his wife and kept her in chains for a decade, treating her as his slave, police say.

The 43-year-old woman was burned on her back and breasts with irons and frying pans, and her foot was smashed under farm equipment.

She also allegedly delivered a stillborn child while in chains. Another infant survived.

Thirty-seven-year-old Peter Lizon is being held in a West Virginia jail on $300,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on a malicious wounding charge tomorrow.

Lawyers ‘lacking in culture’

One of the UK’s most senior judges has said modern lawyers start their careers with “much less in the way of general culture” than their predecessors.

Supreme Court justice Lord Sumption says it is “very unfortunate” that many fledgling barristers and solicitors cannot speak a foreign language.

And he suggests – in an interview with a specialist legal magazine – that aspiring lawyers would be better taking degrees in history or mathematics before moving on to study law.

Remote heating system

British Gas has launched a service allowing customers to control their central heating remotely, saying it could save households around £100 a year.

The system works via a laptop, mobile, smartphone or iPad and enables users to switch on their heating before they get home or switch it off if they are staying away longer than planned.

Users can set a schedule for their home’s temperature on a PC or laptop and turn their boiler on and off via text message.

British Gas said remote heating control could help customers control their energy use, as research found those that left their boiler on while at work or away for the weekend paid on average an extra £140 a year.

Heart attack sandwich

New Yorkers can still order up an instant heart attack.

The Second Avenue Deli (Delicatessen store) has won a court fight with a Las Vegas-based burger joint over the names of their gut-busting foods.

The New York deli’s sandwich called “instant heart attack” is made of sliced pastrami and fried potato latkes.

The Heart Attack Grill in Vegas had ordered the deli to stop serving the fare on trademark infringement grounds.
