The Dalai Lama is in the UK for a whirlwind 10-day tour. After being introduced on-stage in Manchester on stage by Russell Brand (left), the spiritual leader found time to offer some wise words of advice to readers of the Sun: be celibate.

Swedish Zoo worker killed in wolf attack

A woman zookeeper died after she was savaged in a wolf enclosure, Swedish public radio has said.

The 30-year-old woman was alone with eight wolves at Kolmarden Zoo, one of the largest in northern Europe, when the incident happened but it was unclear what led up to the deadly mauling.

The wolf enclosure is well known because the zoo allows visitors into the area to pet the animals.

“Such an event is very rare, but it can happen. Animals living in zoos aren’t afraid of humans and accidents can happen,” wolf expert Olof Lidberg, told Swedish press agency TT.

Pakistani police told to ‘diet or quit’

A Pakistan police commander has ordered thousands of pot-bellied officers to diet or quit frontline duties, officials said yesterday in what one newspaper dubbed the “battle of the bulge”.

Habibur Rehman, police chief in Pakistan’s Punjab province, has ordered 175,000 personnel not to allow their waistlines to exceed 38 inches as at least 50 per cent of Punjab police are overweight. Officers have until the end of this month to shape up and those deemed too fat from July 1 would not be given jobs in the field.

The Pakistani diet is rich in meat, oil and ghee. The country ranks 165 of 194 on the Forbes list of fattest countries, with 22.2 per cent of the population considered overweight despite immense poverty faced by millions in the country.
