Penguins have been carrying out a series of thefts at the London Aquarium.

As the mating season begins, gentoo penguins have been stealing pebbles from rival nests to line their own breeding ground.

But as the number of “break-ins” increase, the gentoos have become suspicious of their fellow colony members, and have started defending their nests.

The colony of 10, which arrived at the attraction last year, are in the middle of their first mating season at the aquarium. Males declare their interest in a female by presenting a “love token” in the form of a pebble to their chosen female. If accepted, the couple then begin collecting more pebbles to line their doughnut-shaped nest.

Town for sale

A developer in the US is looking for someone to buy a small town, which has about 700 residents, one convenience store, a florist, a cabinet shop and a post office.

Developer David Bumgardner, who owns many of the properties in Toomsboro, south Georgia, is putting them on the market.

Mr Bumgardner bought some of the properties from preservationist Bill Lucado and bid for others at auction with the intention of turning it into a quaint tourist town.

But his plans changed and now he and Mr Lucado are putting the town up for sale with the suggestion it would be a perfect fit for a movie production company seeking a set.

Flying squad?

An Alabama police chief revealed he recently discovered that his department has two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Gadsden police chief John Crane said he learned two weeks ago the department has had the UAVs since 2010. The revelation came to light after the US Federal Aviation Administration released a list of agencies certified to fly drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. Gadsden Police Department was on the list.

Mr Crane, who was named police chief in February, said he does not know why they were purchased. The cost was about $150,000, paid with a federal law enforcement grant.
