A video posted on YouTube of a golden retriever sliding down a helter-skelter at a local park has attracted more than 100,000 views in a week.

Henry Kellie posted the video of his dog, six-year-old Tom, at play in Lubenham, Leicestershire, last Thursday. The clip has been viewed more than 103,000 times, prompting numerous comments on the YouTube page.

Mr Kellie, 45, said he could not believe how popular the video had become. “It started off with a few hundred hits but it turned to thousands,” he told the Leicester Mercury. The video can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA_qps8l8yE&feature=player_embedded

Owl chick’s lucky escape

A tawny owl chick had a lucky escape after it was found in the middle of a busy road in heavy rain.

The three-week-old owlet is believed to have fallen from his nest in tall trees at the roadside in Beckenham, south east London, last week, an RSPCA spokeswoman said. He was uninjured but wet, cold and apparently scared when he was discovered, the spokeswoman added.

The owlet is now being cared for at the RSPCA’s Mallydams Wood centre in Fairlight, near Hastings, East Sussex.

Wheel ordeal for terrier

A dog has made a full recovery after jamming its head in the centre of a spare wheel.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s animal rescue team was called to Church Crookham after eight-year-old Tinks the terrier got stuck as she ran around a stable yard, and her owner could not free her.

Tinks could not be released, so she was taken to a vet, who sedated her, and she was freed.

Animal rescue specialist Colin Horwood, based at Hartley Wintney fire station, said: “I am pleased to say that Tinks has made a full recovery from her ordeal, which lasted an hour and a half. Her owner has since disposed of the spare tyre to reduce the risk of this happening again.”

William back home from search and rescue missions

The Duke of Cambridge returned from the Falkland Islands today after spending more than six weeks flying RAF search and rescue missions.

William’s deployment to the remote South Atlantic outcrop in February fuelled growing tensions between Britain and Argentina over the disputed islands. Prime Minister David Cameron and Argentine President Cristina Kirchner have traded barbs in the lead-up to the 30th anniversary of the invasion of the Falklands on April 2.

Argentina has accused the UK of “militarising” the dispute by reportedly sending a submarine carrying nuclear weapons to the South Atlantic, something that Britain has not confirmed.
