Retired Pope Benedict XVI is to move into his new retirement home in the Vatican gardens tomorrow.

The 86-year-old emeritus pontiff has been living at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, in the hills south of Rome, since he resigned on February 28.

A Vatican spokesman said that Benedict will live on the ground floor of the monastery that has been renovated for his use.

Secure phone

British spies could be offered a James Bond-style smartphone app after a UK company devised what it believes to be the world’s first totally secure messaging service.

The secret technology uses complex ciphers to send heavily encrypted messages from one iPhone to another without passing through any central servers – and is being offered straight off the shelf in UK for £3.99.

Designers have challenged hackers to crack its codes and have offered a £10,000 prize to anyone who can intercept a message.

Trolley rage

A supermarket altercation involving Ecuador’s ambassador to Peru has led to calls for his expulsion.

Ambassador Rodrigo Riofrio allegedly struck and kicked a Peruvian mother and daughter after accusing the two of queue jumping.

Ecuador’s embassy apologised but said it did not accept the women’s version of events.

Cat attack

An over-excited cheetah which jumped from behind a fence has been blamed for scratching the leader of Botswana.

A Government spokesman said President Ian Khama needed two stitches to his nose. The cheetah is part of a menagerie kept by soldiers at the Botswana Defence Force barracks at Mogoditshane in Gaberone.

Hidden meaning

An ancient stone with mysterious Hebrew writing and featuring the archangel Gabriel is going on display in Jerusalem as scholars debate the inscription’s meaning.

The stone, said to have been found 13 years ago in Jordan, features an unknown prophetic text from the time of the Second Jewish Temple.
