A rare species of Ecuadorian stream frog has been named Hyloscirtus princecharlesi in recognition of the Prince of Wales’s efforts to safeguard the world’s rainforests.

And Prince Charles said yesterday he will now have to battle even harder in his conservation work following the unusual honour.

Posing for photos with schoolchildren and a glass replica of the frog on his shoulder, he also joked “the things I do for frogs”.

The Prince was presented with a commemorative gold medal along with the brown and orange frog replica by the Ecuadorian scientist who discovered the amphibian.

Lifeguard saves ‘wrong’ man

A young lifeguard in Florida has lost his job after rescuing a drowning man in a section of beach he was not assigned to patrol.

Tomas Lopez, 21, was manning his post on Hallandale Beach, north of Miami, on Monday afternoon when a passerby alerted him to a swimmer struggling in an “unprotected” part of the beach. The swimmer was rescued, then rushed to hospital where he remained in intensive care.

But when Mr Lopez went to file an incident report, he was fired for going 500 metres out of his assigned area.

No longer in a job that pays €6.60 an hour, Mr Lopez said he would do what he did again if he had to.

Questions for the masses

“Do aliens exist?” is the scientific question that Britons most want answering, a survey has suggested.

“Will a cure for cancer ever be found?” and “Does God exist?” are also high on the agenda, according to the study.

“How big is space?” was the fourth most pressing question.

The poll of 2,000 Britons was carried out to mark the launch of Science Month on TV channel Eden.

Driven by fear

Many young motorists in the UK suffer “driving dread”, with some never having parked their own car or used a motorway, according to a survey.

A total of five per cent of 18 to 24-year-old drivers are so unconfident they plan their route to avoid right turns at major junctions, the poll by The Co-operative Insurance company found.

Snow and ice on the roads was the top “dread” for young drivers, followed by fear of travelling on unfamiliar routes.
