The German doctor treating Ukraine’s ailing ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko said he was returning home after announcing that the opposition leader was halting her treatment in hospital

German neurologist Lutz Harms said his return had been planned all along and was not directly related to Mrs Tymoshenko’s decision to refuse further treatment in the state hospital in protest that her rehabilitation programme had been made public.

The 2004 Orange Revolution leader was jailed for seven years on contested charges in October and had agreed to be moved last week for treatment on a bad back that had kept her bed-ridden for months.

Man on fire at Breivik trial

A man set himself on fire yesterday outside the Oslo courthouse where Anders Behring Breivik is on trial for killing 77 people last July but there was no evidence the two events were linked, police said.

The man had early in the afternoon walked up to a large security tent outside the Oslo district court and sprayed himself, probably with a flammable liquid, before catching fire, a video published on the website of the Verdens Gang (VG) tabloid showed.

“Police officers pulled off his clothes and put out the fire,” Kjell Jan Kverme, head of police security operations outside the courthouse, said.

The man was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Wants $20,000 to get dog back

A recently split-up US man is so desperate to get his dog back from his ex that he’s gone online to ask for $20,000 to pay the legal fees on top of the $30,000 he’s already blown.

To attract donors on the site, New Yorker Craig Dershowitz offers rewards ranging from a “virtual smooch” for those giving $10, to free entry at a nightclub where he is a doorman for those paying $100, and a graffiti mural for those ready to give $10,000.
