A pint of lager... and a short, back and sides please, landlord – is not what you would usually expect to hear a punter say to a barman at your local pub.

But for one Cornish alehouse it has become reality – with a barbershop opening at the bar, yesterday. The hair-raising idea was thought up by Malcolm Putko who also owns Ronnie’s Barber Shop in the town with his partner Lucy Laughton.

The pub-turned-barbershop, which will also offer shoe shines and wet shaves, is thought to be only the second of its kind in the country.

Tsunami debris in Alaska

US federal scientists said that a volleyball and football that washed ashore on an island may be the first pieces of debris to arrive in Alaska from last year’s tsunami in Japan.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the sports balls were spotted by a radar technician on Middleton Island. His wife traced the writing on the balls to a Japanese school in an area hit by the tsunami.

Doug Helton, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said the balls are one of the first pieces of debris that can be traced back to Japan – and make it possible to return it to the owner.

Bieber mobbed at airport

Pop heartthrob Justin Bieber was mobbed by fans yesterday as he flew into the UK.

The Never Say Never star flew into Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport wearing a bright yellow baseball cap. And he headed straight into a horde of devoted fans. The gang of “Beliebers” took photos and tried to grab his autograph as the Canadian star’s minders steered him to a waiting car after his flight.

Bieber was attending a launch event in west London last evening for his third album Believe which is due out in June.

Walking the dogs

A US promoter hopes to break a world record by parading at least 700 costumed dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, down a city street on a holiday celebrating the Mexican heritage.

Mark Valentine says the Kansas City parade will introduce Chihuahuas to their cultural heritage while helping an animal refuge. The Chihuahua breed’s name comes from the name of the Mexican state.

Valentine says the Guinness world record for most costumed dogs does not specify a breed. He expects there will be more than enough entries to break it on the Cinco de Mayo (May 5) date.

Women bare bras in protest

Six Ugandan female opposition activists were detained briefly yesterday after they stripped to their bras to protest the alleged sexual assault by police of a colleague.

The activists, who marched on Kampala’s main police station, said they were angry at police treatment of a female opposition leader Ingrid Turinawe last week, which reportedly included the squeezing of her breast.

Police claimed that the officer responsible for the groping was a woman.
