Almost 5,500 over 40s attended a training course organised by the Employment and Training Corporation last year, Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Mario Galea said.

Over 1,100 attended literacy classes, 1,400 followed IT-related courses and more than 3,000 took up one of the various hospitality courses.

Mr Galea was speaking during a conference on Working Beyond Retirement organised by Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee.

He said a recent survey conducted by the University of National and World Economy examined the attitudes associated with the employment of older workers.

Among the advantages were greater loyalty, invaluable experience, ability to serve as mentors to less experienced workers, strong work ethic and an established network of contacts and clients.
