A man who lost a finger after an industrial accident in 2001 was awarded nearly €145,000 in damages yesterday.

John Peter Stanton filed a court case against his employer Schembri and Sons Limited.

He said that in the course of his work he had to operate a machine that made moulds for concrete.

The machine was defective and he was injured in an accident, later needing the middle finger of his right hand amputated, he said.

Experts who examined the machine concluded it was not defective, but Mr Stanton had a poor grasp of how to change the mould and there was a failure to take dangerous situations seriously.

Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco said it was the employer’s responsibility to provide a safe system of work. The company had not fulfilled its obligations.

The court awarded him €144,675.63 in damages.
