A woman duped her former employer into handing over €3,000 to win a non-existent tender, a court heard yesterday.

Annabelle Monreal, 28, of Xemxija, denies misappropriating the money to the detriment of Zahra Trading and Properties, defrauding it, falsifying documents and relapsing.

Ms Monreal allegedly received the money from her employer in May last year to bid for a Żurrieq local council contract to repair a rubble wall.

Żurrieq mayor Ignatius Farrugia testified yesterday that the tender never existed and he had never spoken to Ms Monreal about anything to do with contracts.

Council secretary Josianne Cilia Montfort confirmed Mr Farrugia’s statement and, when shown a document pertaining to the alleged tender, she said it was a false document because the letterhead was in the wrong place.

Police Inspector Rennie Stivala prosecuted. Lawyer Roberto Montalto was defence counsel. The case continues.
