A Nigerian woman who caused a commotion at the airport when she allegedly refused to let security officers search her belongings was yesterday remanded in custody.

Onyeakpa Blessing, 28, who resides in Torino, Italy, appeared before Magistrate Doreen Clarke charged with disturbing the peace, swearing and making obscene gestures in public and obstructing a public officer in the performance of his duties.

The prosecution alleges she did not allow her belongings to be searched for dangerous items when she arrived on Tuesday. In the following disturbance Ms Blessing allegedly hurled an unidentified hard object at one of the officers, closely missing him.

In the courtroom, the tearful woman said she was sick and wanted to go home. She pleaded not guilty to the charges. No request for bail was made.

Police Inspector Silvio Magro prosecuted. Legal aid lawyer Anthony Stellini appeared for the accused.
