A Ukrainian woman insisted yesterday she could not recall what had caused a gash on her forehead about which she had filed a police report saying her Maltese boyfriend beat her.

Testifying in the case against cheesecake-maker Ludwig Camilleri, 35, from Qawra, Svetlana Datsyuk insisted she could not remember how she had been injured despite being shown the police report she had filed saying her boyfriend had beaten her up. In the report she also said the beating had been going on for two years.

She said she was “very drunk” the night the incident took place and could not remember what had happened. Police Inspector Therese Sciberras pointed out that she had filed the report more than seven hours after the incident but Ms Datsyuk continued to insist she could not recall what happened.

At one point, Magistrate Audrey Demicoli asked her if she had a problem with her memory and she said she did not. She later admitted that she wanted to drop the charges she had filed against Mr Camilleri because their relationship was going strong.

In her police report, filed on August 12, 2010 at the Qawra police station, Ms Datsyuk had said Mr Camilleri, the father of her child, had punched and kicked her.

A doctor who examined her at Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department told the court she had a gash on her forehead that needed suturing as well as bruising to her arms and legs.

The prosecuting officer said Ms Datsyuk had told the police she had gone to Mr Camilleri’s mother soon after the incident and had jumped out of a window into a neighbour’s balcony to be able to go to the police to file the report.
