Congratulations to Ronald Cassar for the excellent feature on Winston Churchill’s connection with Malta (January 24). It brought back memories of his wartime visit to Malta with President Franklin D. Roosevelt prior to the 1945 Yalta meeting.

I managed to get a close glimpse of them in Kingsway after they emerged from The Palace. What struck me at the time was seeing Mr Roosevelt’s four bodyguards jogging alongside the open jeep with the President sitting on a raised seat acknowledging the crowd’s enthusiastic cheers. It was a first in Malta as we had never had bodyguards with celebrities before.

In the same issue, the usual “Quote” on the Pursuits page was one of Sir Winston’s: “All the great things are simple freedom, justice, humour, duty, mercy, hope”. Sir Winston omitted “love”; it was May 1942 and Britain was in great danger of losing the most important war in its history. He did not, I am sure, feel any love for the enemy!
