Malta had a positive start to the European Team Champion-ships, currently underway at the Marsa Sports Club, as both the men’s and women’s selections won their opening matches yesterday.

The women’s team, com-posed of Colette Sultana, Johan-na Rizzo and Theresa Brousson, had a comfortable debut when they eased past Turkey 3-0.

However, the hosts lost to Denmark 3-0 in the afternoon.

Today, the Maltese girls play Greece at 11.30 a.m. and then Sweden at 4 p.m.

In the men’s tournament, Brad Hindle Deguara, Daniel Zammit Lewis, Carl Camilleri and Steven Schranz, who re-present Malta, overcame the challenge of Lithuania (Mantas Kociunas, Martynas Pempe, Andrius Voisnis and Gediminas Saudargas) 4-0.

Today, the men’s squad will play against Poland at 10 a.m. before an afternoon match against GSSE rivals Cyprus at 4 p.m.

Seventeen teams are taking part in the championships which come to a close on Saturday.
