The Whistleblower Act, which Prime Minister Joseph Muscat pledged to introduce by the time Parliament rises for its summer recess, is expected to receive unanimous backing, according to the Nationalist Party.

The PN parliamentary group will vote in favour and the party said it would actively participate in the discussion and table a number of amendments to have a stronger and more effective legislation.

According to the party, the Bill tabled by the Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Owen Bonnici on June 26 was very similar to the one drafted by the previous government.

This Bill, which has been in the offing since 2008, was a central proposal in the PN’s general election manifesto but had never made it through Parliament.

The PN said it supported all initiatives meant to strengthen institutions that fight corruption or any other form of abuse.

It added that the Bill, set to be debated at the second reading next week, was almost identical to the one Labour had criticised from the Opposition benches.
