The public has been informed that Bendy Buses Axed From ‘Tight’ Routes (July 22) and that these buses, of which there are 75, will be used only on main roads wide enough to take them.

I ask: what defines a main road? Sliema and St Julian’s have main roads, namely Tower Road in Sliema and Borg Olivier Street and St George’s Road in St Julian’s, but the mayhem that exists in these roads is totally exasperating.

The width of our main roads cannot take a bendy bus attempting to turn a corner, let alone two of them. The dents and scratches on these buses bear witness to this.

One only need go to St Julian’s to witness four of five bendy buses going up the hill and another four or five coming down. The provenance of these buses is also baffling, as one will notice they are coming from or going to Dingli, Mater Dei Hospital, Mellieħa, Ċirkewwa, the airport and wherever.

Why do all these buses have to pass through St Julian’s and Sliema? They are too frequent and they cause traffic to stagnate.

It would appear that all 75 of them pass through these two towns, through which it has become impossible to drive without getting oneself into heavy traffic.

I should also mention the manner in which these bendy buses park at bus stops, which are far too small for them. As is the norm, the rear of the bus sticks out into the middle of the road, stopping all other traffic.

It is gratifying to see that the ministry responsible for transport is taking steps to ease our pain

It is my sincere wish that all 75 of the bendy buses be removed from service. They were no good for London and are far less ideal for Malta.
