Sam Allardyce finally showed that he is good enough to keep his team in the Premier League.

On their return to the top flight last year, West Ham finished in mid-table with high hopes of gaining more respect this coming term.

Allardyce is a great motivator and makes his teams hard to beat. He has a new two-year contract and is already in the process of assembling a stronger squad as the Hammers will move into the Olympic Stadium in 2016.

Roberto Martinez had been at Wigan Athletic since 2009.

Last season, he guided the Latics all the way to the FA Cup but, unfortunately for Wigan, they also became the first English club to win the domestic silverware and be relegated in the same season.

This summer, Martinez joined Everton and Wigan are pinning their hopes of a quick return to the Premiership on the shrewd Owen Coyle.

Striker Andy Carroll showed his true potential at Upton Park and Allardyce has now signed him permanently for a club record fee of £12m.

Former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish had forked out £35m for Carroll’s signature from Newcastle.

Two other captures that grabbed the headlines for Allardyce were goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and midfielder Yossi Benayoun.

West Ham ended the campaign with a close defeat at Manchester City, a draw against Newcastle, a loss to Everton, and a 4-2 win at home to Reading to sign off for the year and claim 10th place in the final classification.

Wigan bid farewell to the Premier League with a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa, finishing 18th and joining Reading and Queens Park Rangers down in the second tier of English football for the 2013-14 term.

Shaun Maloney, who again stood out in the Wigan side, was selected player of the year.

West Ham held Man. United to a 2-2 draw at Upton Park in the third round of the FA Cup but lost 0-1 in the replay at Old Trafford.

In the League Cup, the Hammers were knocked out by Wigan in the third round. The latter were then eliminated by Bradford City on penalties.

Last May, the Latics claimed their first ever FA Cup, defeating favourites Man. City 1-0 in the final.
