Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is still attempting to enhance his squad before the close of the summer transfer window, but is also focused on the players already at his disposal.

The Gunners’ pursuit of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez continues, while it has been reported that Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder Luiz Gustavo is a €16 million target.

As Arsenal await a marquee signing which may or may not materialise before the September 2 closure of the transfer window, Wenger believes it is important to look at the players he does have available for the start of the season.

“We are in the transfer market and we try still to strengthen our squad,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“It’s important as well now to focus on the squad who are already at the club and that you focus on the competition, not only on the transfer market.”

Yesterday, reports in Germany said Bayern Munich acknowledged that Gustavo, 26, is a target for top clubs in Europe but did not say whether they intend to let him go this summer.

Apart from Arsenal, Italy’s Napoli, with cash to spend following the transfer of Edinson Cavani to Paris SG last month, are also in the chase for the Brazilian as well as other clubs from the Bundesliga and Russia.

Gustavo, formerly of Hoffenheim, joined the Bavarian giants in January 2011 for an undisclosed fee.
