The ‘boots season’ officially started this week, with many rummaging through wardrobes for their rain-resistant footwear.

Some needed them more than others as they had to wade through gushing water while crossing flooded roads yesterday morning.

Heavy rainfall caused the usual inconveniences, with areas such as Birkirkara, Msida, Marsa and Qormi under water. This resulted in heavy traffic as people tried to avoid certain roads, clogging other routes.

Civil Protection Department head John Rizzo said no major accidents were reported. There were cars submerged in water and collapsed walls but no one was injured, he added.

A spokesman for the Met Office said that, so far, the weather for November was normal in terms of rainfall and temperature.

The drop to 10°C in the evenings was the result of cold air coming towards Malta from the North of Europe, the spokesman explained.

Over the weekend, the island will be experiencing bad weather because of low pressure air from the south of Libya.

The misery will peak on Sunday with winds reaching gale force eight. The weather will start to improve on Monday.
