The article by Aaron Farrugia, Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds and Social Dialogue, entitled ‘Sustainable use of our water’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, February 25), is cause for concern.

One of the reasons for a water shortage in the future is without doubt an increase in our population. Therefore can Mr Farrugia tell us why the government is encouraging more and more people to come and reside on our tiny island?

Surely it is short-sighted to keep selling passports and expanding our economy to the extent that there aren’t enough local workers to service it? Besides, other services such as healthcare and road transport are already stretched to the limit. Life is a roller coaster and one day the bubble can burst.
