With all the rain recently (and more is forecast for next week) readers might be amused by this caricature of Sir Edwin Chadwick, shown here as ‘merman’ with fish’s tail and webbed hands.

Sir Edwin was father to “our” Osbert Chadwick, RE, CMG of the eponymous lakes and many other feats of water engineering in Malta. Chadwick père was a British social reformer. His work on the improvement of sanitation in the United Kingdom had a significant impact on public health, so much so that his name appears inscribed on one of the facades of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
