I read a reader’s letter (August 31) on public immodesty with great interest.

I too am absolutely outraged by the sight of practically naked people cavorting along the seafront. Many even have the audacity to wander into bars and restaurants in their all too skimpy apparel.

Keep it on the beach I say! This is Malta, not Brazil.

On the subject of beach behaviour I would like to note a further lapse in moral standards.

I have lost count of the number of times I have observed topless sunbathers stretched out on the shoreline exposing themselves to all and sundry. There is a law against this and ample warning signs in more languages than one. Little heed is paid to them.

In my native Scotland full heed would be paid and draconian consequences would follow.

We are fortunate to have a marvellous police force and I would not lay any of the blame for the lack of action on them.

From what I have observed they appear completely overstretched, dealing with the all too many traffic violations that have become a modern disease on the island.

Crime comes in many guises and we all have to prioritise. I would suggest that we set up a volunteer group to enforce standards of public modesty.

I have in mind something akin to the New York ‘Guardian Angels’ who patrolled the subway there with much success.

I would be more than happy to approach offenders and politely but firmly request they dress appropriately while walking on the public highway.

If anyone refused to comply we could then call upon the resources of our professional law enforcement officers.

Like the previous correspondent, I too would be interested to hear the views of other local residents, the Malta Tourism Authority, the police and, of course, the Church.
