Wasteserv’s hydrolyser tank, which was at the centre of a controversy when the government shut down the Marsascala Family Park in summer, will be repaired in the coming weeks after parts arrived from abroad.

The park was closed in July on the recommendation of scientist Edward Mallia after the planning authority’s Żejtun air quality station recorded higher than usual levels of sulphur dioxide on at least two occasions.

This was caused by damage sustained in May to the tank, which cleans the biogas from the hydrogen sulphide produced from treating household waste. The park was reopened in September.

Speaking at Wasteserv, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said that among the company’s priorities in 2014 there would be a greater degree of contribution by the board of directors in terms of policymaking, as opposed to their resources being absorbed on secondary matters of an administrative nature.
