The Health Directorate is warning consumers not to eat the Baktat Helva with pistachio nuts due to the excessive presence of aflatoxin in the product.

Aflatoxin is naturally occurring and is among the most carcinogenic substances.

The food item, which weighs 350 grams, is produced in Turkey and has a lot number of LL310511-01, expiring May 2013.

The Environmental Health Directorate said three food consignments had been stopped for not being up to scratch.

On September 30, a trader failed to notify authorities of the consignment being imported and court action would be taken.

On October 14, a consignment of several food and non-food items were returned to Italy due to a breach of food safety regulations. Five days later, another consignment was withheld as it was not transported in adequate temperature conditions and also because of labelling irregularities. This consignment will be destroyed.
