In his letter ‘Traffic trap’ (January 31), Paul Cassar highlighted the absurdity of wardens issuing tickets for touching the outer parts of the painted mini-roundabout at the Republic Street crossroads in Victoria.

One has to question what their priorities are.

They should, first, take action to combat dangers to life and limb and, secondly, help ease traffic flow.

Yet, it should be noted that the roundabout in question sees drivers, particularly of heavy commercial vehicles, constantly ignoring the ‘give way to the right’ rule, thus endangering other road users.

On either side of the roundabout, along Republic Street, there is frequent double parking, which the wardens usually ignore despite the fact that this is a major impediment to other traffic and also makes crossing the road more hazardous for the pedestrian.

In Main Gate Street, even parking on the zebra crossing appears to be tolerated.

Fines for these sorts of traffic offences would make sense. Is it too much to ask that those who have the responsibility revisit and revise the priorities they set for the warden service?
