I was not surprised by what Emeritus President Eddie Fenech Adami said about Nationalist MP Franco Debono (The Sunday Times, November 6). The sensitivity of Dr Debono passes over the former President’s head.

Many students I know have suffered outrageous delays, some lasting six hours, to visit their father or mother in hospital.

Students have had to leave home at 6.30 a.m. to be at a lecture starting at 8.30 a.m., when it would have been quicker to walk it.

Transport Minister Austin Gatt made a mess of things and rode roughshod over people’s feelings and dire needs. He would not apologise.

The old system could have been corrected without having to spend €53 million. One step would have been to suspend and fine owners of buses which were not kept clean.

Drivers who were not behaving decently would have had their driving licence withdrawn forever. Air-conditioning could have been installed on all buses by using some of the money given to the old bus owners. The old buses could have been changed and replaced with low-floor buses to accommodate people with disability. It would not have cost half the money.

It is now more than clear that Dr Gatt failed totally. This is borne out by the fact that the Prime Minister felt he had to set up a task force under his chairmanship to try to make up for the total fiasco which resulted in the “revolution” Dr Gatt created.

Why are we taking it out on Dr Debono? Is it because he has a human approach to our problems?
