A global march calling on governments to end the water and sanitation crisis that kills 2,000 children every day will be held to commemorate World Water Day tomorrow.

SOS Malta, a voluntary organisation, said 783 million people worldwide lacked access to clean water and 2.5 billion people lived without a safe toilet.

Although no such walk will be held in Malta, the organisation is urging people to take a virtual ‘walk’ by visiting its website and see the water conservation projects it is undertaking in Uganda. SOS Malta is building rainwater harvesting systems, wells and boreholes in disadvantaged communities in Uganda to ease the physical burden of young women in having to collect water. Since 2009, SOS Malta has built rainwater harvesting tanks that will benefit thousands of children and young people.

“Water is an issue for all of us and we all must take action for the sustainable management of the world’s precious water resources. By acting together, in our thousands, all over the world, we can make a difference,” the organisation said.

Its work was supported by Vascas Jewellers, Orienta, Fortina, Professional Marketing Services and Cleland and Souchet.
