Vodafone this week announced its New Year’s resolution: its promoters will no longer stop people on their way to Valletta.

The announcement on Facebook earned the mobile telecommunications company more than 1,600 likes.

“So here is our New Year’s resolution. We have listened to you! Our promoters will not be present at Valletta and will no longer be stopping you on your way into our capital city. Feel free to visit our shop in Republic Street to benefit from the latest offers),” the announcement read.

But apart from the appreciation from Vodafone’s Facebook followers, the announcement also got its fair share of criticism.

“About time,” was the most common response, as people used the opportunity to vent their frustrations about the practice that has become common upon entering Republic Street.

Others Facebook commentators suggested that Vodafone should opt for another resolution: to give good offers to their already existing customers, not just the new ones.

The Times sent questions to Go and Melita to see if they too would ensure that their promoters stopped this hard-selling approach that seems to bother everyone, but no replies have so far been forthcoming.
