M is for museums: One of the most breathtaking in the world is undoubtedly the Rijksmuseum. You can admire masterworks like Rembrandt’s Night Watch, several paintings by Vermeer, van Dyck, Jan Steen and a truly exceptional collection of Asian art. Don’t miss the Masterpieces exhibition.

S is for shopping: With everything from multi-storey department stores like De Bijenkorf, Magna Plaza, Kalvertoren and exclusive boutiques to antiques and contemporary Dutch design, Amsterdam inspires even the most discerning shopper. There is also a lot of markets where you can find almost everything, from flowers to kitch.

T is for transport: Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. Thanks to the many bike paths in the city, pedal power is all you need to uncover the city’s gems on your own, or as part of a guided bike tour. It’s easy to rent a bike in the city centre (Central Railway Station or Leidsplein).

E is for entertainment: The Muziektheater (Music Theatre) is located in the centre of Amsterdam at the borders of the river Amstel. It offers a stage to two in-house companies: the Dutch National Ballet and De Nederlandse Opera. There are also productions by other companies from Netherlands and abroad.

R is for restaurants: Whether it is Argentinian, Indian, Thai or typical Dutch fare you are after, look no further. Amsterdam has over 1,000 restaurants catering for the tastes, needs and budgets of even the discerning tourist or local. Unlike in the rest of Europe, vegetarians are well catered for. Dining in this diverse and vibrant city can range from fast food to haute cuisine, with every nation faithfully represented.

D is for disco: Laid-back, high brow and pumping in turns, Amsterdam never sleeps. The city offers everything from night theatres, art parties and live music from well-known and up-and-coming international bands, to packed clubs with the best DJs spinning everything from R&B and house to hard rock and hip-hop.

A is for art: Art galleries play a major role on the rich cultural scene of Amsterdam. There are organised periodical events such as cultural festivals and art fairs. Once a year, usually in May, the art fair of most recent developments in visual arts – Kunst RAI Amsterdam takes place in the city.
