Internationally recognised violinist and conductor Adrian Butterfield will give a free masterclass exploring the Baroque and Classical repertoire on November 27 in Valletta.

Delivered in a historically informed manner, Butterfield will present and discuss repertoire by composers such as Bach, Handel and Mozart. Performers may choose to present the works on either modern or period instruments.

Butterfield is a violinist, director, conductor and teacher who specialises in performing music from 1600-1900 on period instruments. He is musical director of the Tilford Bach Society and associate director of the London Handel Festival. He is also a guest soloist and director in Europe and North America with modern and period ensembles.

Butterfield is also a founder-member of the London Handel Players who perform regularly at Wigmore Hall and worldwide, having made their debut at Carnegie Hall in 2014. He also leads the Revolutionary Drawing Room, an ensemble which specialises in performing Classical and Romantic repertoire on period instruments.

Among other recordings of his, his world premiere complete recordings of Leclair’s first two books of violin sonatas, released in 2009 and 2013, have been widely acclaimed.

 

■  The masterclass is being held in the music room at St James Cavalier in Valletta on Sunday, November 27, between 10am and 1pm. Those who wish to participate should send an e-mail with their name and the title of the baroque or classical period composition they wish to perform by tomorrow to Rebecca Hall on rhall01@um.edu.mt. Shortlisted applicants will be informed shortly thereafter.
