As testament to its growing role in the Maltese sports scene, a young member from Vikings Sailing Club (VSC) has just returned from a successful participation in Zhik Topper Worlds in Pwllheli, Wales.

Sean Zahra, 16, represented Malta in the annual ISAF-recognised centre-board dinghy competition which attracted a fleet of more than 150 competitors.

Zahra put to good use one of the eight new dinghies VSC purchased in 2013 to further its mission of promoting good sportsmanship and seamanship among the Maltese people, especially the youth.

In Wales, Zahra overcame adverse weather conditions, including strong tides and winds at times, to finish in a credible 54th position out of 155 participants in his category.

VSC Commodore Richard Gabriele said: “Considering this was the first time for Sean to participate in an event outside the country, his achievement says everything about his dedication.

“Results like these by young Maltese sailors are what drive all of us at Vikings to continue empowering members of the new generation with the right training.”

Zahra has been practising the sport for the past seven years, making use of the different dinghies available at the club.

He has regularly participated in the VSC’s annual sailing marathon, and for the past two years has undertaken the full 50 hours with other young sailors.

“Competing against some of the world’s best budding sailors was a riveting challenge and I was absolutely thrilled at the prospects of meeting great sailors from around the world.

“This was truly a great learning experience,” Zahra was quoted as saying.
