Vienna has made it to Broadway, with the home-grown musical Rebecca due to open in New York’s famed theatre district next year, producers announced Wednesday.

The German-language musical, which opened in Vienna in September 2006 and is based on Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name, is to be adapted by a New York producer team and will have its Broadway premiere on April 22, 2012, the Vereinigte Buehnen Wien (VBW) said in a statement.

British playwright and Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton, best known for his screenplays to the films Atonement and Dangerous Liaisons, will adapt the lyrics for the English-language production.

The VBW greeted the prestigious move across the Atlantic as “a great challenge and joy”.

“Broadway is the measure of all musicals,” it noted.

Rebecca has already been produced in Japan, Hungary and Finland and will next be seen in Germany.

It is also due to open in London’s West End after its Broadway run, the VBW said.
