Another table tennis season has just been completed as the Malta Table Tennis Association again hosted a season full of action and activities with hardly a weekend free in the 2011-12 calendar.

During the recent National Championships, veteran Mario Genovese went on to seal the singles event and doubles when partnering Edward Baldacchino.

This was Genovese’s 21st national singles title having won his first way back in 1980.

He beat second seed Andrew Gambina and Alex Soler on his way to the final where he met Daniel Bajada.

This was a match that reached a high in technical terms as both contenders adopted power strokes to the full to try and break through each other’s tactics.

At the end, Genovese won a tight contest 4- 2.

In the women’s championship, Jessica Pace had a fairly easy passage to the title as she beat Amy Degaetano, Dorianne Magri and Therese Genovese.

Pace won all her championship matches with relative ease to secure the women’s major honour of the season.

In the mixed doubles competition, veteran players Joe Borg Cardona and Johanna Grech produced stiff resistance to the challenges of Pace and her father David, and Genovese and his daughter Therese.

In the end, experience prevailed as Borg Cardona and Grech went on to win the honour.

Paul Dawson fought it out with Borg Cardona in the final for veterans with the latter winning the title for 2012.
