Verona are set to appeal against the €40,000 fine handed to them by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) yesterday over their fans’ behaviour against Milan on Saturday.

The Serie A newcomers came from behind to score a shock 2-1 win over Milan in the first game of the league season.

It looked like being business as usual when Andrea Poli gave the Rossoneri a 14th-minute lead following good work from Mario Balotelli.

But two Luca Toni headers – one either side of half-time – turned things around in a clash which was marred by the throwing of smoke missiles, pointing lasers and tearing up of seats towards the end by Verona supporters.

The legaseriea.it website re-ported: “Verona have been fined 40,000 euros after their supporters, during the match, released smoke in the enclosure of the game; also to have, towards the end of the match, directed some laser beams towards the referee and the players of the opposing team.

“To have finally, at the end of the match as the crowd flowed from the stadium, launched objects of various kinds and uprooted some plastic seats at the supporters of the opposing team, without serious consequences.”

Verona in response, confirmed on their official website, hellas-verona.it, that they will fight the fine.

They said: “In reference to the fine established by the Sporting Judge Gianpaolo Tosel... Hellas Verona FC will file an appeal with the relevant bodies.”
