The third round of the ASMK 2014/15 championship, sponsored by Poiatti, was held last weekend. A total of 42 competitors took part in Autocross and Motocross races.

In Autocross, 25 drivers were involved in a keen tussle to qualify for the Class A and B finals.

The track was in optimal condition but no driver managed to win all the heats.

In the Class A final, victory went to Philip Joe Vella (Opel Corsa) who finished ahead of Jason Martin (Volkswagen Polo) and Gordon Johnson (Peugeot 205) respectively.

Christian Mark Galea, Andrew Pisani and Malcolm Borg followed in that order.

Vince Farrugia, driving a Volkswagen Polo, took the Class B honours ahead of Matthew Borg (Vauxhall Nova) and Ivan Birmingham (Suzuki Swift).

Noel Zammit, Keith Borg and Philip Grima were the other top-six finishers in Class B.

Sunday’s programme also saw the introduction of a new championship class, named Autocross Standard. So far, two drivers, Deane Farrugia (Citroen AX) and Gozitan Joseph Vella (Ford Fiesta) have registered to take part in this new competition.

The first race was won by Farrugia.

The Motocross championship got under way last weekend with 15 riders, of varying ages, divided into two classes.

In Class A, Clayton Camilleri, riding a KTM, had no rivals, winning all the heats on the day. He was followed by Paul Muscat, on another KTM, who ended the day in a creditable second place.

Three riders, Edward Ciantar (Kawasaki), Trevor Muscat (KTM) and Stefan Dimech (Honda) were engaged in a tight battle for third place.

They finished on equal points but Dimech took third place overall after beating his rivals in the last race.

Ludvic Muscat, on a KTM, was the top rider in Class B after winning the two heats. Second place went to Turu Micallef, on a Honda, and Adam Sultana was third on a Kawasaki.

The Motocross Open Race, run according to the new regulations for this section, is open to all riders.

The Class A competitors showed their mettle as Camilleri made it a double of victories with Muscat and Dimech finishing second and third respectively.

The ASMK’s next event, the fourth round of the Autocross Championship, is scheduled for Monday (public holiday), starting at 11am.

It has also been announced that the applications for the annual Demolition Derby, to be held on December 21, are now open. Closing date for applications is next Thursday.

Prospective participants are urged to attend a meeting on December 12 at the ASMK clubhouse in Mtarfa, starting at 8pm.

The Demolition Derby is a charity event in aid of L-iStrina.
